Pampaloni, San Fermin - Bull Running Festival

If you are looking for something really pump the adrenaline, why not try running a group of bulls 600 pounds. In mid-July 1995 during a surf trip along the European coast Pampaloni I had to take part in the famous bull-running festival, with thousands Nutters (and me) ran a piece of winding streets, chased by about 10 angry bulls.

The event starts at 8.00 am every morning for a week, so if you participate in one placewithin the crowd. The route begins in a piece of the old Spanish-style street between two tall buildings, full of locals making the sign of the cross on the front of the participants in intrepid. As you can imagine, is something unnerving and would be more if the skin is full of red wine and coca cola, dancing and not sleeping, was not numb the nerves a bit '. And 'quite a sight to see, if you have a smaller version of the London Marathon to be alone with thousands of drunk and Spanishtourists, all dressed in white with red scarves. If you think that sounds like a death wish, it is not, because you get to protect yourself with a rolled-up newspaper! Yes, to protect the buttocks off the impending doom of a bull horn. No!

Your position determines your basic training in crowd safety during the first part of the race. If you are just opposite is more likely to have in the field to see a bull (as long as you remain standing). If you are at the bottomThe bulls are certainly passes by. So for the first time its best to go near the front to find the essence of what is happening. We are located in the third front.

The first gun for anyone to start running. Running is a slight exaggeration, because if you do, you will trip on the person for you. And you're hardly trot with the rest of the crowd. Then moments later the second gun sounds. The bulls are free and running at full hand, I expect.

The courseis 3 / 4 miles in total and should be completely surrounded by buildings with no place to run, open sections on the ground, marked by a wooden barriers embedded in the. These are pretty hard to escape because there are teams of onlookers peering over and wait for the frantic and frightened back into the brawl thrust.

Chaos is the best word to describe the race and that was even without seeing a bull on the course. Then run through the entrance ofArena, which is a concrete corridor approximately 50 meters in length. This is the most dangerous place and what they definitely do not want to be involved in a pile here. Once through the entrance you walk into the camp, a great way to see before and for the life of Brian fans among you, once in the unique opportunity to experience the scene for real gladiator. The bulls appear at the end, back to reality and walk through the crowd in a fence at the rear ofarena. Next "they" (the authors of the crazy event, which are obviously hell bent to kill or maim at least Participants odd) allows smaller, more energetic bulls, one-on-one time with some chaos. These bulls have horns on their leather pads to protect the crowd, at least, which means that if you are charged will not die a slow death and pain full, but you might get thrown into the air a few feet and head! The little 'difficult is that there are more than a thousandother people on the scene, making it very difficult to see the bulls. The crowd suddenly parts to you for a crazy bull run directly reveal in full coat, his head and close quickly. My natural instinct was to run and my head is the first barrier of about 6 feet to throw. Under normal circumstances this would be seen as a dangerous and reckless move, but given the circumstances I felt that a carefully considered and a life-saving maneuver that means I've survived withbut all my pride intact!

Once all the bulls have used smaller, have left an hour rest, the biggest bulls in the crowd, things to shake-a-bit. This is obviously more dangerous, because you can imagine what would happen if one of these steps on the head. Fortunately, during our run, there were serious injuries (I think), but serious injuries have all the time, so do not take too lightly this pastime. The year I was an American boy of 22 years and had diedone of the 15 deaths since 1924. In reality, the days in which to publish photos of racing that day for participants to purchase. Even around town there are photos from the past, with some images rather disappointing incident that had happened. I suppose this is done for the runners to remember the worst that can happen is dead! A beautiful extreme sport, all-in-all!

Tips for surviving the Pampaloni - San Fermin

Try and familiarize yourself with the course of the firsthand. No running until you saw once. Be aware that fall and be trampled by people is one of the main dangers. If you fall, lie, cover their heads and wait for an observer taps on the shoulder. They are more dangerous to try to get up at that stage. Be aware that Callejon-Plaza de Toros and the end of the Cuesta de Santo Domingo is the most dangerous area. These spots have claimed a total of 12 lives over the years to keep down the corners as the bull runs large.Do not drink and sleep. Even with this opinion running of the bulls in Pampaloni can be very dangerous.
